Telescopic Bimini

Bolster

Bolster is a company that specializes in textile products. One of there clients is Monster Tower who produces Wake-Board towers and accesories. One of those accesories is a kind of parasol to provide shade called a Bimini. Bolster was already producing the canvas for this product, but was now also asked to redesign and produce the frame work.

Our final design, the Telescopic Bimini, folds in and out in less than a minute and lets our users create shade whenever they want.

The Problem

Due to a rule change the aluminum tubes for the Bimini frame couldn't be oxidized any longer in China, forcing Bolster to either change manufacturers, materials, the design or all three. The current design was rather difficult to open and close by oneself, especially when out on the water. Due to this our team was tasked to redesign the Bimini within a production price of 105 euro and a shipping size of 100 x 50 x 20 cm.

Quick and Dirty Prototyping

The ideation resulted into six ideas of which my team made quick and dirty prototypes. These were small models made from PVC pipes and t-shirts. This way a more accurate idea could be created of how the tube base would interact with the fabric, what the coverage was and the user journey.

Our final prototype can easily be folded and unfolded in one minute by one person and due to not needing to be bended stayed within the 105 euro budget.
