Sheape
Creativity is an important part of children’s development, improving things like fine-motor skills and problem-solving. Stimulating creativity is therefor of the utmost importance.
Sheape facilitates caregivers and teacher to teach young children about colour and shapes by not only seeing, but also feeling the different shapes.
It also gives children a space where they can freely create and get inspired by the different colours and shapes to create their own masterpieces.

The Problem
Creativity is an important part of a young child’s development, but incorporating this in the learning environment can be difficult. When children are thought colours and shapes this is often accompanied by simple drawing assignments, like draw a house, a flower or a butterfly. The problem is however that children even when they are given the freedom to draw whatever they want get stuck within these assignments and keep repeating the same drawings.
This same problem can arise when children keep being presented with the same imagery when coloring.
Ideation
When I read about this problem the artwork of Kadinsky immediatly came to mind. He was an artist from the early 20th century. His work consited of basic colourfull shapes displayed in an intresting compositon. This resulted in the viewer being able to interperate the painting in different ways.
If his art could be translated into a piece of furniture or decoration this could teach children about the differnt colours and shapes, while also inspiring them to experiment more with different shapes.

Prototype
A scale model was created to see if the colouring and the different levels translated well. It was also found that the legs were rather unstable. To solve this an extra piece of cardboard (wood in the final piece) was added at the backside of each leg.

Final Concept

Sheape
Sheape is a table that allows children to explore new shapes and colours by seeing and feeling.
The sides showcase the basic shapes, while the top border an abstract array of shapes and colours. In here there's also a slot for pencils and 4 cups of paint or water to lessen the mess.
The height of table can be adjusted by unscrewing the legs and screwing them back in a different position.
